Italy has the following regions:

Abruzzi

This region with around 1.3 million inhabitants is located in the center of the country, bordering the Adriatic Sea in the east. Important cities in this region are L'Aquila and Pescara. Emilia-Romagna | Basilicata

This region is located in the north of Italy and is bordered to the east by the Adriatic Sea. The capital is Bologna. It is one of the richest regions with approximately 4.4 million inhabitants.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia | Puglia

This is the most northeastern region of the country, bordering the Austrian Alps and Slovenia to the east. A region with approximately 1.2 million inhabitants with Trieste as the regional capital.

Lazio Rome

A densely populated region located in the center of Italy and bordered to the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea. This region with the regional capital Rome has a highly developed service sector and has almost 6 million inhabitants.

Liguria Genoa

Liguria is a small but densely populated region with about 1.6 million inhabitants. It is located in the northwest on the coast of the Ligurian Sea. Genoa is the capital of the region.

Lombardy

Lombardy with the regional capital Milan is located in the north of Italy near the Swiss border. About 10 million people live in this densely populated, wealthy region.

MARCHE

This region, where approximately 1.5 million people live, is located in the center of the country between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. Ancona is the regional capital, another main city in this region is Urbino.

MOLISE

Molise is located slightly south of the center of the country on the Adriatic coast. It is a shrinking region with around 305,000 inhabitants. The regional capital is Campobasso. Isernia is the second city.

Piedmont

This region 'at the foot of the mountains' is located in the northwest of Italy, bordering the Swiss and French Alps. The region has approximately 4.4 million inhabitants. The regional capital is Turin.

Sardinia

Transport to Italy is also possible by water. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and is located north of Tunisia. It has approximately 1.65 million inhabitants. The capital is Cagliari. Another important city is Sassari.

Sicily

This large island in the Mediterranean Sea is located northeast of Tunisia and has more than five million inhabitants. The capital is Palermo, other important cities are Catania and Messina.

Trentino-Alto Adige

These two northern provinces in Italy border Austria. This region, which has 1.1 million inhabitants, is home to the Brenner Pass, a well-known road for many transporters. Important cities in the region are the regional capital Trento and Bolzano.

Toscana

A centrally located region in the middle of Italy with the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. Florence is the regional capital. Other well-known cities in this region are Pisa and Siena. The region has approximately 3.8 million inhabitants.

Umbria

This region is located in the center of Italy and is the only region that is not bordered by the sea. Umbria, with Perugia as its regional capital, had just under 900,000 inhabitants in 2013. Other important cities in the region are Perugia and Assisi.

Valle d’Aosta

With only 113,000 inhabitants, this is the smallest and least populated region in the north of the country. Bordered by France to the west, Switzerland to the north. Aosta is the regional capital. Transport to Italy is also possible to this smaller region.

Veneto | Molise

Located in the north of the country and bordering Austria and the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The capital is Venice but Verona is the largest city. About five million people live there.
